    On Tuesday, 31 July 2012, Chad le Clos, the South African swimmer, won the 200 m  butterfly in 1 min 52.96 secs to beat the world record holder Michael Phelps by 0.05 seconds in this            event at the Olympic Games held in London.

 

(      (a)   Calculate the average speeds in m/sec of Phelps and le Clos during the 200 m butterfly race

             on 31 July 2012

                        (ANS : le Clos : 1.770538244 m/sec and Phelps : 1.769754889 m/sec)

(      (b)   By how many millimetres did le Clos beat Phelps at the finish of the 200 m butterfly event

             on 31 July 2012? (88.4877 mm).

 

CALCULATION:          

                    After 1 min 52.96 secs  Phelps swam   200 × 112.96/113.01 = 199 991.5123 mm

                   Which is  88.4877 mm short of le Clos’s  200 000 mm.
